8 dagen op reis, en samen het land ontdekken. Natuurlijk met bekende hoogtepunten zoals Petra en Jerash, maar dan op een andere manier dan standaard ontdekt. De vrijwel onbezochte hoeken van de ruïnestad Jerash bekijken, op een kameel stappen door de Wadi Rum, of dwalen door de verborgen gangen van kruisvaarderskasteel Kerak.
Graag neem ik je ook mee naar mijn “eigen” werkplek: de oude stad Gadara, tegenwoordig Umm Qes (Qais) geheten. Gelegen op een adembenemend mooi plek, waar zowel de oude als de moderne geschiedenis je bijna letterlijk aanvliegt. Ik heb er driemaal aan een archeologisch project mogen deelnemen, en een stuk van mijn hart is er achter gebleven, voor altijd.
Maar er is veel meer dat we gaan doen: kastelen, mozaïeken, zwemmen (natuurlijk in de Dode Zee), en zelfs bijzondere natuur ontdekken, allemaal in deze prachtige reis.
Een privé-reis in een kleine groep (maximaal 8 deelnemers), met eigen vervoer door het land, volledig vrij om te doen wat we willen. Ik ben jouw betrouwbare gids, ik ken de weg, ik ken de manieren. Leuke kleine plaatselijke hotels, bijzondere maaltijden, wie weet zelfs in de open lucht met mijn vrienden uit Umm Qes, genietend van de bijzondere Arabische gastvrijheid. De reis duurt 8 dagen. We vliegen vanaf Schiphol rechtstreeks naar Amman, en zwerven dan minstens 6 dagen door het land. De heen- en terugvlucht vinden overdag plaats dus je komt niet dodelijk vermoeid van het vroege opstaan aan of van het late aankomen thuis. Relaxed!

Iedereen kan deelnemen aan de reis, maar interesse in oudere architectuur en geschiedenis komt natuurlijk wel van pas.
Ik maak de architectuur begrijpelijk in een ontspannen en toegankelijke verteltrant en laat je met andere ogen naar de gebouwen kijken. Degenen die al eens met mij mee geweest zijn, of mijn lezingen hebben bijgewoond weten hoe dat gaat.
Het maximale aantal deelnemers is 8. De reis gaat door bij minimaal 6 deelnemers
Door het kleine aantal deelnemers kan iedereen aan de gesprekken en discussies mee doen, en vragen stellen.
Het is wel handig als je nog wat vlotter ter been bent. Enkele plaatsen, zoals Petra, zijn uitgestrekt en vragen een stevige wandeling om te ontdekken. Tegelijkertijd zijn er ook voldoende rustplekken op die wandelingen.

Alle dagen zaten bomvol, de excursies waren in alle opzichten toppers en de overnachtingsplaatsen waren meer dan goed. Op het eten was niets aan te merken en de Petra biertjes smaakten elke avond naar meer.

Jordanië is natuurlijk een Islamitisch land. Daar gaan we zeker mee te maken krijgen, al was het maar dat je elke avond en morgen het gebed hoort vanaf de minaretten in het land.
Is dat hinderlijk? Voor mij is het dat nooit geweest, niet anders dan het klokgelui in Europese landen. Immers, in diverse landen is het op het platteland ook nog heel gebruikelijk dat om 7 uur ‘s ochtends en ‘s avonds de klokken luiden van de kerk..
De dames zullen nu misschien vragen, moet ik dan een hoofddoek dragen? Nee hoor, dat is absoluut geen vereiste, zelfs geen advies. Net zo min als een Boerka-achtige jurk. Wel wordt algemeen geadviseerd om je niet al te bloot te kleden. Een minirok met een minuscuul topje is zeker geen geschikte kleding. Trouwens, met de hitte van de zon is dat al helemaal niet aan te raden!
Jordanië is een Islamitisch land maar wel een dat zich altijd heel sterk heeft gericht op het Westen. Misschien is het wel het meest Westers georiënteerde Arabische land. Wij zullen er ook gewoon een wijntje kunnen drinken zelfs deels plaatselijk geproduceerd!
De vrijdag is de vrije dag, de dag dat men naar de moskee gaat en de dag dat het minder makkelijk is om ergens naar toe te gaan of b.v. boodschappen te doen. Maar daar zal ik in het programma natuurlijk rekening mee houden.
Kortom, het is een prettig land waar je gastvrij wordt ontvangen, man of vrouw!

Er zijn nu (februari 2025) geen reisbeperkingen meer voor Jordanië. Mochten er bepaalde stukken nodig zijn, dan meld ik dat uiteraard tijdig!

Dankzij mijn uitgebreide verblijven in het land voor de opgravingswerkzaamheden heb ik het land goed leren kennen, en weet de bijzondere plekken te vinden. Wij kregen destijds ook alle gelegenheid om de andere historische plekken van het land gaan bekijken! Of nee, eigenlijk moesten wij die gaan bekijken, het maakte integraal deel uit van ons onderzoek, vergelijkende architectuur.
Ik vermijd, waar mogelijk, de grote toeristenhordes, en houd je zoveel mogelijk weg van beruchte “tourist traps”.
Beleef het land als reiziger!. Het kan nog steeds!

Met mijn typische eigen verteltrant neem ik je mee op ontdekking. Leer de ins en outs van de bezienswaardigheden kennen, ontdek verrassende zaken die voor veel mensen verborgen blijven. Gniffel om kleine grappige details, laat je overweldigen door imposante complexen. Geniet van onverwacht natuurschoon. En natuurlijk, dobber in de Dode Zee, een ervaring om nooit te vergeten… (misschien zelfs wel tijdens een zonsondergang???)
Ooit wel eens een reusachtige Romeinse kolom zachtjes heen en weer zien wiegen?

Samen met een eigen busje door het land toeren. Ontspannend en volkomen vrij op stap. Met alle tijd en ruimte voor een stop hier of daar. Voor iedereen individuele aandacht en gelegenheid om vragen te stellen. Een aanvullende programma wens? Die proberen we in te passen, mijzelf kennende: er is overal een oplossing voor!
Wie durft er een waterpijp aan? Heerlijk genieten met en tussen de Jordaniërs inclusief een kopje thee (die dan wel weer mierzoet is, maar oh wat vind ik die lekker!).
